Accessibility

We want Wirely to be usable by everyone, including people using a screen reader, a keyboard on its own, or a magnified display. This page sets out where we have got to, honestly — including what is not right yet.

What we aim for

We work to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA as our standard. We have not commissioned an independent audit, so we describe this as what we build towards rather than as a certified result.

What we have checked

  • Colour contrast. Every text colour in the design system is measured against the background it sits on. Body text runs at 17.5:1, secondary text at 8.0:1, and the dimmest supporting text at 4.6:1 — all above the 4.5:1 AA threshold for normal text. A label grey that measured 4.08:1 was replaced across the portal for this reason.
  • Keyboard use. Every link, button and form field on the public pages and in the portal can be reached and operated with a keyboard alone, in a sensible order.
  • Reduced motion. The site has one scroll-reveal animation. It is switched off entirely for anyone whose system is set to prefer reduced motion.
  • Without JavaScript. The page content is visible with JavaScript turned off. It has to be stated because it was briefly not true: the reveal animation started content hidden, so a visitor without JavaScript saw a blank page until we added a rule to unhide it.
  • Small screens. Every public page has been checked at 390px wide with no sideways scrolling, and text reflows rather than being cut off when zoomed.
  • Structure. Pages use real headings in order, form fields have labels attached to them, and images that carry meaning have text alternatives.

Known problems

  • We have not tested with screen readers beyond basic checks. VoiceOver, NVDA and JAWS can behave differently and we have not been through the portal with each.
  • The portal's task pages are dense, and while they are keyboard-operable, moving through a long task by keyboard alone is slower than it should be.
  • Some data in the portal is laid out as tables that scroll sideways on a phone. They are readable, but a wide table is an awkward thing to navigate on a small screen.
  • Uploaded documents are the visitor's own files. We cannot make a scanned PDF accessible on their behalf.
